Review of Måneskin's Rush!

Måneskin Rush! Album Cover
Are we at the start of a new Italian Renaissance? Join the 'Kool Kids' and take a listen to Måneskin's new album "Rush!" as they continue their world domination.

A few months have passed since this year's Sanremo Music Festival. Gianni Morandi finished sweeping up the last bits of roses and pottery destroyed by Blanco and the Fedez & Rosa Chemical kiss is now part of Sanremo history. I couldn't help but remember the first time I saw Måneskin during the 2021 Sanremo Music Festival.

It was during the start of Covid. There were no audience members at the Teatro Ariston. The host, Amadeus, had balloons with faces drawn on them throughout the theater. Måneskin came out like a raucous wind, shattering the sound barrier. They just killed it. It was great to hear a raw hard rock band playing against all the slick produced artists. It was almost like seeing The Beatles on Ed Sullivan, how punk killed the bloated proginess of the 70s and when grunge put Aqua Net out of business. It was definitely a historical moment in rock when they won Sanremo that year and then to win Eurovision. The last hard rock act to win Eurovision was Finland's Lordi in 2006.

Released on January 20, 2023, Rush is their third album. Bristling with old school rock swagger with flourishes of alternative and electronic dance music like Afterhours, Marlene Kuntz and Radiohead.

Own My Mind starts things off. It is a bouncy rocker with terrific guitar and bass riffs. Gossip is another bouncy rocker with an infectious riff and groove. Synical lyrics and a memorable guitar solo from Tom Morello make it a quintessential rock staple.

Time Zone is a nice ballad about life on the road and missing the one you love. Bla, Bla, Bla, is a hyper infectious song with satirical and cynical lyrics. Baby Said is a bass driven song complimented with some nice clever guitar fills & riffs. Gasoline is the most interesting song on the record. Sinister, intense and dark make this a highlight of the album.

Feel is another bouncy rocker with a cool jazzy pre-chorus. Don't want to sleep is a fun rocker. Kool Kids is a unique song driven by a punky bass riff and Damiano's cockney British accent. If not for You is a nice sentimental ballad. The bass line gives Read your Diary a snappy feel. Vic seems to have an endless supply of funky, catchy bass riffs.

Mark Chapman is the first of three songs in Italian. It is a fast paced rocker with an exceptional chorus. La Fine is the second song sung in Italian and continues the pace with great guitar riffs. Il Dono Della Vita is the last song in Italian. It is a beautifully crafted ballad.

Mammamia is a funky bass leading song. Reminds me a lot of I Want to be your Slave from Teatro d'Ira

Supermodel is a perfect rock single.

The Loneliest is a heartfelt ballad with a beautiful melody and contemplative lyrics.

Overall, Måneskin keep their edginess on this recording but loses a bit of their rawness from the previous one. I believe it is a sign of band maturing and focusing on the craft. Working with various songwriters and touring extensively helped tighten up the band to build their career.

Måneskin are on the pulse of today's youth and poised to conquer the world. They are young, sexy, talented, and hardworking. Plus, they have great management.

Daje Måneskin!
