Candlemass Sweet Evil Sun Review

Candlemass Sweet Evil Sun album cover

Imposing doom riffs propelling heavy power is our next adventure with Candlemass. Released on November 16, 2022, Sweet Evil Sun is Candlemass's 13th studio album and third with singer Johan Längquist.

Powerful vocals, sludgy propelling riffs and heavy brooding guitars are the trademark of this legendary, epic doom band. The doom advances with their latest album "Sweet Evil Sun."

"Wizzard of the Vortex" starts off with an ominous sounding incidental music and kicks in with heavy, sinister skin flaying riffs. "Sweet Evil Sun" is earthy, heavy and climatic.

"Angel Battle" and "Black Butterfly" are epic, bone crushing, sludgy grooves. "When Death Sighs" has some meaty, beasty riffs tempered by Avitarium vocalist Jennie-Ann Smith.

"Scandinavian Gods" reminds me a little of Slayers "Raining Blood."

"Devil Voodoo" starts off with a Pink Floyd like acoustic guitars. Then heavy guitars kick in like an evil eclipse. "Crucified" is a slow mournful song with malevolent riffs. "Goddess" breaks in with cement churning groove and apocalyptic ending. The last song "A Cup of Coffin" is a nice heavy outgoing instrumental.

Overall, Sweet Evil Sun showcases the band as battle hardened warrior sages of metal.
