Recorded in Nashville at the famous RCA Studio A. 4 is the first album recorded for the new Gibson Records label. Released on February 11, 2022, the album has a hard rock swagger and is pure magic. Slash and Myles Kennedy are a perfect match.
The band sounds raw, loose, and gritty. The recording has a hard rock swagger that is missing in a lot of today's rock recordings. This is because of the band's recording approach. Their strategy was to record the band live in a large room. They wanted to capture a vibe of the excitement of playing live in a recording studio. The focus was not on perfection and technicality but on the overall feeling and experience you feel when listening to good rock music. Like going to a live show. You capture the pure essence of rock music.
The songs have balls to wall riffs, ferocious solos, and powerful vocals. Slash channels his deep Aerosmith type grooves, tempering it with bluesy riffs and Alice in Chains type changes.
"The River is Rising" kicks everything off and sets the mood for the album.
"Whatever Gets You By" continues the pace with a cool groove and catch verse. "C'est la vie" has Slash bringing out the talk box. "The Path Less Followed" continues to rock while "Actions Speak Louder than Words" has a nice phased guitar riff.
"Spirit Love" is a sinister, psychedelic, slow and heavy song with a middle eastern sounding riff. "Fill My World" is a beautiful, heartfelt, radio friendly song.
"April Fool" has a good Aerosmith type groove.
"Call of the Dogs" is a fun song with a great opening riff. The riff sounds similar to an AC/DC song "Riff Raff."
Finally, "Fall Back to Earth", is an epic ballad, mid-tempo song to close off the album.
Overall, 4 captures that classic rock sound and spirit, bringing it to the modern day.
Song highlights are: "The River is Rising," "The Path Less Followed," "Spirit Love," "Fill My World," and "Call off the Dogs."
